The Program

All course work must be completed prior to commencing the work terms. Work term placements are arranged by Waterloo's Department of Co-operative Education and Career Services in consultation with the student and the Department of History. Co-op work terms may include, among many others, placements in heritage departments, in private industry or in various federal, provincial or municipal government departments, and in historic sites and museums. A work term report must be submitted after the two work terms. To complete the degree students must write a Master's Research Paper. The recommended parameters are 50-75 pages. As a result of this program, students will have had work experience in both academic and non-academic settings.

For entrance to the Public History Co-Op M.A., the Admissions Committee is seeking applications from students who are interested in pursuing careers in the above fields. Government agencies, corporations, and museums are becoming aware that the historical perspective and research expertise of the public historian are essential. To ensure the most effective teaching/learning conditions, enrolment in the option is limited to 10-15 students annually. Course descriptions for this program are available on our main graduate site.
